How we create value

A pathway to better nutrition

We provide affordable protein through our poultry and egg products, distribution networks and retail customer relationships. This drives food security, combats malnutrition and contributes to better health and wellbeing.

An integrated, diversified and optimised value chain

We are one of the only suppliers for larger customers requiring security of quality supply. Our integrated feeds and farming business segments mitigate cyclical and geographic concentration challenges typical of the agricultural sector.

Pioneering opportunities in Africa

We explore options to invest and expand our capacity in high-growth areas in sub-Saharan Africa. We service rural areas and informal markets in Zambia and Uganda, and supply both informal and formal retailers in Mozambique.

Strong sustainability focus driving efficiencies and impact

We are committed to advancing good environmental, social and governance practices to maintain a sustainable, ethical and responsible business. This is supported by solid management bench strength and investment in a development pipeline.

Financial prudence and risk mitigation

Our board of directors and executive team manage cash flow and working capital in an environment characterised by high input costs and periodic disaster events, such as outbreaks of poultry diseases. We have a healthy asset base to grow through further strategic investment.

Flexible, data-driven operating models

We have developed inherent resilience to high-impact events such as poultry diseases, allowing us to respond quickly and effectively. Data captured throughout the value chain leads to improved efficiencies, productivity and margin protection.

Geographic footprint

From our head office in Wellington, South Africa, we co-ordinate operations in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Mozambique. Our production facilities in these countries are well established, have a proven track record, and have a strong base to expand into sub-Saharan Africa.

Operations

Our value chain

Quantum Foods has an integrated and diversified value chain that enables us to provide affordable access to poultry and egg products for human consumption and animal feeds for livestock consumption.

Natural resources

>
We rely on water, energy, gas, land, fuel, crops, poultry and livestock for our business activities.

Procurement

>
We procure agricultural crops as feed raw materials, particularly maize and soya meal, from local and international suppliers, with local sourcing prioritised.

Farming

>
We own a range of poultry farms and hatcheries in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Mozambique. We also have contracts with layer breeder, layer rearing, broiler breeder, live broiler and egg farmers.

Manufacturing and processing

>
We have several animal feed mills, egg packing and liquid egg processing facilities in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Mozambique. We process raw materials according to formulas and package eggs and egg liquid according to customer specifications.

Distribution and retail

>

Distribution is done by road and mostly outsourced for all product categories. We transfer or sell products to a range of internal and external customers.

  • Animal feeds – internal customers and commercial livestock farmers
  • Day-old broiler chicks – internal farms and commercial livestock farmers
  • Broilers – commercial abattoirs
  • Day-old layer chicks and point-of-lay hens – internal customers (for egg production) and external customers
  • Eggs and liquid eggs – retailers, wholesalers, industrial customers and informal markets

Waste

>

Waste includes poultry litter or manure, bird mortalities, food waste, packaging and effluent. Waste is treated onsite where possible or contracted for removal, reuse or recycling. Effluent is either treated through municipal infrastructure or in evaporation dams.

We maintain the highest levels of quality and safety through both internal and external audits and inspections. Our flock, animal feed components, products and facilities comply with standards such as ISO 9000, 14001 and 45000, FSSC 22000 and export certification.
